Luke:
For the foreseeable future I am a 30-something American expatriate who has traveled extensively and spent most of the last 10+ years living outside of the US. I originally imagined the "Travel Guide for Your Finances" as a book, but I've been posting my experiences here and haven't got to the book yet!
Almost 11 years ago, my wife and I got married and went to Europe. We've spent most of our life out of the United States ever since. In that time we've worked odd jobs, got advanced degrees and tried to figure out where to go next.
We don't have any wealthy benefactors, haven't won the lottery, and don't lay golden eggs. We spend what we earn -- which means that we've learned to be frugal. We've managed to live in most of the countries we've visited (including the UK) on less than $2,000 USD/mo. It helps to earn the currency of the country you're living in, but since I've never been a "permanent resident" of any country other than the US, I've always needed to maintain US financial accounts, including bank, credit cards and mutual funds.
This site is primarily user updated and depends on users like you to post updates to make sure information stays current. Without frequent user updates, content would be quickly outdated.
If you've had an interesting financial experience abroad, we'd love to hear from you. A lot of what I'm inspired to write is based on emails I receive from people asking questions or sharing experiences.
If you'd like to share your experiences on a more regular basis, we're hoping to expand the site over the coming year to allow expats to file reports from the countries they're living in. If you'd like write occasionally about living and spending in your home abroad, give me a shout!
Disclaimer:
I've been lots of things over the years, but one thing I'm not is a financial advisor. What works for me financially won't necessarily work for you. When I write about specific financial accounts and rates etc., I always try to link to the source, which allows you to verify what I'm saying. Read the lengthy directory disclaimer for more! Most of what I've chosen to write about so far, including foreign transaction fees, credit card class action lawsuits, ATM fees and the like, can be factually verified. I encourage you to do so and contact me if you find errors :)
